As an enthusiastic user of the Libby app, I've immersed myself in its digital library offerings, exploring everything from audiobooks to magazines. However, as my engagement with the app deepened, I began to recognize its limitations in delivering an optimal user experience.

Analysis

Problems

The primary issue with the existing Libby app revolved around its cluttered and convoluted interface, making it challenging for users to navigate and locate desired content efficiently. This clutter detracted from the overall user experience, potentially discouraging users from fully engaging with the app's offerings.

 
 

Solution

Leveraging principles of user-centered design, I focused on creating a cleaner and more intuitive interface that prioritized essential features. Through iterative design processes and user feedback, I refined the app's layout and navigation pathways, ensuring that users could seamlessly browse, borrow, and enjoy digital content with ease. The redesigned Libby app aims to enhance the reading experience for users, fostering a deeper connection with the wealth of literary resources available through their local libraries.

 
 
 

USER RESEARCH

Personas

Whether juggling work and family, enjoying retirement, or navigating the challenges of adolescence, they all share a common need for simplicity and accessibility in their reading experience. Their common pain points include cluttered interfaces, limited time for reading, and difficulty in discovering new content.

A busy 40-year-old parent and marketing manager desires an app for convenient access to e-books and audiobooks with her busy schedule.

Teen Reader Liam
A 15-year-old high school student craves an app with easy access to her favorite young adult fiction and graphic novels from the library.

PROTOTYPE

Sketch

The focus during the sketch process was to explore a wide range of design possibilities during rapid ideations and iterations. Starting with rough wireframes and user flows, I iteratively refined key features and layout concepts. By embracing the flexibility and creativity of sketching, I developed a solid foundation for the redesign, laying the groundwork for further refinement and development.

 
 
 

OUTCOME

Style Guide

My focus for the style guide was on establishing clear and consistent visual guidelines. I defined a clean color palette, simple typography, and familiar iconography, iteratively refining these elements to ensure they conveyed the desired tone. Embracing flexibility and creativity, I laid a solid foundation for the app's visual identity, facilitating further refinement and development.

Homepage

In the home page redesign, I aimed for simplicity and accessibility to enhance usability and streamline the user experience. Just like visitors walking into their local library, users can access everything they need from a single page: their synced library card, recent activity, new releases, trending content, and personalized recommendations. I found it important to have access to as much content as possible, as quickly as possible.

 
 
 

Profile & Settings

With simplicity and accessibility in mind, I aimed to offer users easy access to manage their account preferences and settings. Users can conveniently update their profile information and customize their reading experience—all from one centralized location within the app. This addition ensures that users have greater control over their app experience, further enhancing the overall usability and satisfaction of the platform.

 
 
 

Explore page

In the explore page redesign, the streamlined layout offers efficient content discovery. I placed the search bar at the top for quick access and included recent searches below. Users can now explore content through two methods: They can discover from the Library or search by content categories.

 
 
 

Search Result

In the redesigned search result page, I maintained fast-action buttons for borrowing, placing holds, and saving titles while reducing the size of each tile. This adjustment allows for quicker exploration of search results. Users can quickly narrow down their search by content type (Books, audiobooks, magazines, and kindles) and refine criteria for more precise results.

 
 
 

Library

On the library page, I've preserved all the existing information while optimizing the user experience by reducing the size of the tiles for quicker exploration. Additionally, I've added a progress bar and time-left feature to provide users with valuable insights, enhancing their overall reading experience.

 
 
 

Borrowed Books

On the book page, I've preserved all the existing information while optimizing the user experience by condensing the page for quicker comprehension. Being able to see more information from the book without needing to scroll is a big improvement in exploration speed and reduces decision-making time.
